You Won’t Believe What We Found: My Top 10 Must-Watch Movies of the Second Half of 2021!

You remember September 23rd, 2020?

Of course, you do.

But do you remember what went down on Martin’s Press on Sept 23?

Of course not.

It was my first movie post ever!! A year and Martin’s Press is a favorite home for movie lists!!

2021 has been a great year for some people, and a not-great year for some. But I did see a lot of pretty cool movies this year and thus I present to you my awesome list of the top ten movies I’ve seen so far in 2021!!!

Let’s go!

10. Pirates Of The Caribbean (2003 to 2017)

Orlando Bloom and Johnny Depp (Jack Sparrow) Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

I’m dishonest, and a dishonest man you can always trust to be dishonest. Honestly, it’s the honest ones you want to watch out for, because you can never predict when they’re going to do something incredibly stupid.” -Jack Sparrow

Pirates of the Caribbean is a series of fantasy swashbuckler films produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. The film series follows the adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley). Characters such as Hector Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) and Joshamee Gibbs (Kevin McNally) follow Jack, Will, and Elizabeth in the course of the films. The film series started in 2003 with Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and has five movies in total.

Pirates of the Caribbean is a great series of movies with Johnny Depp at the head of the wonderful star cast. Pirates of the Caribbean has been on my watchlist for years, so after seeing Starz’s Black Sails, it seemed like the natural follow-up. POTC set the standard for swashbuckling pirate movies for years to come.

9. Klaus (2019)

IMDB Rating 8.2/10

Klaus (2019)

[narrating] Letters. You don’t really write many these days, do you? But I bet there’s one you never forget. Send it off to a certain plump guy in a red suit and, provided you’ve kept your act together more or less, he’ll drop off a toy or two. And yet, no one seems to wonder how the whole thing got started in the first place. This is a story about letters, and it began… with this one…

Jesper

When Jesper (Jason Schwartzman) distinguishes himself as the postal academy’s worst student, he is stationed on a frozen island above the Arctic Circle, where the feuding locals hardly exchange words let alone letters. Jesper is about to give up when he finds an ally in local teacher Alva (Rashida Jones) and discovers Klaus (Oscar winner J.K. Simmons), a mysterious carpenter who lives alone in a cabin full of handmade toys. These unlikely friendships return laughter to Smeerensburg, forging a new legacy of generous neighbors, magical lore, and stockings hung by the chimney with care.

8. Luca (2021)

Production Companies – Disney/Pixar

IMDB Rating 7.5/10

Luca (2021)

This is gonna be the best summer ever! We’ll ride down every road, see the whole world together! It’ll be amazing! But there’s just one thing no one can find out…

Luca Paguro

Young Luca and his best friend, Alberto, summon up the courage to visit the picturesque fishing village of Portorosso. However, the boys share and hide a great secret: they are not ordinary children but harmless sea monsters who live underwater, eager to find out what lies above the sea’s surface. Before long, adventure after adventure, and experience after experience, the two wide-eyed explorers will discover the true meaning of freedom, the importance of family, and the catalytic power of acceptance.

7. The Last Duel (2021)

IMDB Rating 7.5/10

Adam Driver and Matt Damon in The Last Duel (2021)

Marguerite de Carrouges: I am telling the truth.

Nicole de Carrouges: The truth does not matter.

It’s 14th-century France. As he gradually loses favor with Count Pierre d’Alençon, the battle-scarred veteran knight, Sir Jean de Carrouges, has a falling out with his brother-in-arms and former friend, squire Jacques Le Gris, after saving his life in the Battle of Poitiers. Then, much to Jean’s horror, his beautiful wife, Marguerite de Thibouville, accuses Le Gris of rape. To defend her honor, wronged Jean accuses Jacques of the hideous crime against Marguerite before the court of His Majesty, King Charles VI, requesting a duel–a custom outlawed years ago. However, the truth is in the eye of the beholder – the truth according to Jean, the truth according to Jacques, and the truth according to Lady Marguerite. As a result, the interpretation of three different realities and three conflicting points of view culminates in a grueling match to the death. Who will emerge victorious in the last duel?

6. DC Extended Universe (2013 – present)

The Flash (Ezra Miller), Batman (Ben Affleck) and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) In Zack Snyder's Justice League

“I Don’t Care How Many Demons He’s Fought In How Many Hells. He’s Never Fought Us. Not Us United.”

Batman to the Justice League (Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021))

DCEU movies have been around since 2013, and I have seen Man of Steel (2013), Dawn of Justice (2016), Suicide Squad (2016), and Wonder Woman (2017) before 2021. However, it was in 2021 that I decided to see the entire DCEU universe from start to finish. And it was an errrmm… OK ride. Some movies like Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman were great while some like Justice League (2017) were just sad.

5. Free Guy (2021)

IMDB Rating 7.7/10

Free Guy (2021)

Guy: I know this world is just a game, but this place, these people, that’s all I have. So I’m not gonna be the good guy. I’m gonna be a great guy.

Molotov Girl: [inhales] Wow, enjoy your lifetime supply of virginity.

In the extremely popular video game, Free City, an NPC named Guy learns the true nature of his existence when he meets the girl of his dreams, a human player. This player’s interactions with Guy have massive effects on him, the game, and the real world as they play it.

4. The Breadwinner (2017)

IMDb Rating: 7.7/10

Parvana in The Breadwinner (2017)

My name is Sulayman! My mother is a writer. My father is a teacher. And my sisters always fight each other. One day, I found a toy on the street. I picked it up. It exploded. I don’t remember what happened after that because it was the end.

Sulayman

Under the Taliban’s strict rule, somewhere in the dusty and bustling town of Kabul in Afghanistan, the 11-year-old girl, Parvana, helps her father sell the family’s goods in the market, amidst potential customers and gun-toting fundamentalists. But when her dad is incarcerated on a convenient and unjust pretext, it’s up to the spirited Parvana’s resourcefulness to feed and care for the rest of her family with the use of a desperate and daring plan. Eventually, as Parvana, the youthful storyteller, takes matters into her own hands wandering all alone on the perilous streets, an unexpected friend will provide hope and a sense of freedom. But is a will of iron enough to survive in a man’s world?

The Breadwinner is a truly touching animated film, depicting the restricted living of pre-invasion Afghanistan and the grueling effects of never ending war on the Afghan people.

3. The Dark Knight Trilogy (2005 – 2012)

All the Batman villians in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Trilogy

“It’s Not Who I Am Underneath But What I Do That Defines Me.”

– Batman (Batman Begins)

Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Trilogy has to be the best Batman live-action movie(s) of all time. Despite the casting of Christian Bale as the Dark Knight, Christopher Nolan makes Batman the most iconic superhero with his back-to-back box office and critically acclaimed movies. After stalling for years, I finally decided to see the trilogy and I wasn’t disappointed. The villains, Joker (Heath Ledger) and Bane (Tom Hardy) were one of the best villains of all time.

2. Batman: The Long Halloween (2021)

IMDB Rating 7.6 /10

Holiday in Batman: The Long Halloween (2021)

Batman: The Long Halloween (2021) is a stunningly crafted, two-part animated film that will keep fans of the Caped Crusader on the edge of their seats. The movie is a faithful adaptation of the iconic comic book series, which follows Batman as he tries to catch a serial killer, Holiday, who strikes on every major holiday. Featuring a talented voice cast and a gripping storyline, The Long Halloween is a must-see for fans of the Dark Knight. The film is a love letter to the classic Batman stories of the past, while still feeling fresh and exciting for modern audiences.

Films that are Worthy Of Mentioning but didn’t make it to my top 10.

  • Gunpowder Milkshake (2021)
  • Boss Level (2020)
  • Project Power (2020)
  • Joker (2019)
  • True Grit (2010)
